The This Morning host waded into the Jeremy Clarkson debate today saying there was "no excuse" for the incident.

In an interview with The Sun, the 52-year-old said the presenter, 54, was a "great character and broadcaster."

But said: "Having said that, he has said things in the past which were unacceptable and has apologised for some of them."

The TV star added: "But in this case, that’s too far. There is just no excuse for that sort of behaviour."

While Phillip said he needed to accept fault, Simon Cowell put the incident down to him just "being Jeremy" at the Princes Trust Awards yesterday.

The 55-year-old told the Daily Mirror: "I like Jeremy. He has said some stupid things and he knows that, but he’s apologised.

"It’s quite obvious the public are behind him. But you know, that’s Jeremy."

Katie Hopkins also stuck up for the disgraced personality "following a fracas" with Oisin Tymon.

Writing in her column in The Sun, Katie said: "Deciding to suspend Jeremy Clarkson is a little bit like hanging the Queen.

"The nation watches in horror, the culprits look like utter gits and Britain loses a national treasure."

Amid speculation over who had informed bosses, it has been suggested that Jeremy directly contacted BBC director of television Danny Cohen about what happened.
