Manuel Pellegrini's future is under threat with City expected to axe the Chilean at the end of the season following a campaign of failure.

And the champions are ready to turn to Benitez, with the ex-Liverpool and Chelsea boss believed to be keen on a return to English football.

A source close told the Daily Star: "He has always wanted to work in the Premier League again because he thinks it's the best place to be.

"It would have to be the right offer for him and managing Manchester City appeals to him. It's something he would definitely be keen on."

City could offer Benitez a 12-month deal while they wait on top target Pep Guardiola to see out his contract at Bayern Munich.

Benitez - currently in charge of Italian outfit Napoli but coming to the end of his deal - fulfilled a similar role at Stamford Bridge and despite being hugely unpopular with Blues fans he won the Europa League.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is also on City's shortlist of targets to replace Pellegrini but like Guardiola he may not be available this summer, raising the prospect of Benitez heading to the Eithad as an interim option.
