The Liverpool defender challenged the charge for his stamp on David De Gea in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

But he has been banned for three games after the incident was spotted on TV and an independent panel heard his case.

The FA statment read: "The defender had denied the charge which related to an on-field incident involving Manchester United's David de Gea in the 95th minute of Sunday's game which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"However, an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today found the charge proven."

Martin Skrtel's ban has been upheld

The Liverpool defender is now set to join Steven Gerrard in missing the games against Arsenal, Blackburn in the FA Cup, and Newcastle.

Gerrard was sent off after 38 seconds having come on as a substitute at half time.

The Skrtel incident was the last act of the game as he chased down a ball into the box and his foot landed on De Gea's leg.

The players squared up but no action was taken by referee Martin Atkinson at the time.

Liverpool are not expected to comment.
