The England international is available after the club lifted its suspension on the 27-year-old, who is accused of sexual activity with an underage girl.

Johnson is due to answer police bail on April 23, and is in line to figure after a two-game absence for the Black Cats' visit to Upton Park following his return to training.

New head coach Dick Advocaat refused to confirm his squad, but is expected to include the £10m former Manchester City star. He said: "Everyone who is training is available for selection.

"I will make a after the final training session. We have some injuries, so we don't know exactly know who will join us at this stage."

Adam Johnson could return to the Sunderland squad

Sunderland are a point above the drop zone having won just once this year, with Saturday's 4-0 home defeat by Aston Villa proving the last-straw for Gus Poyet's turbulent 16-month reign.

Holding his first press conference since taking charge for the remaining nine games of the season earlier this week, Advocaat, 67, added: "Whether this is my biggest challenge, I don't know. Everything you do in football is a challenge.

"I knew plenty about Sunderland from watching them on TV and I have a good feeling about the squad.

"We've not discussed staying longer than the end of the season so at the moment it's not so important."
