Blame our defence! Arsene Wenger lifts lid on why Arsenal crashed out of Europe

ARSENAL crashed out of the Champions League thanks to their own defensive frailties and Monaco’s “efficient” finishing, says manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side face Newcastle this weekend

The Gunners went down 3-3 on aggregate in their last-16 clash on Tuesday, despite winning their second leg in Monaco 2-0.

They suffered a 3-1 defeat in the first fixture, where Monaco managed 10 shots on goal to Arsenal’s 13.

And Wenger insists the clash was lost in that first game at the Emirates.

“We are on a good run and we won the game (in Monaco) and of course we are frustrated and disappointed to go out,” he said.

“But it’s not down to our performance on Tuesday night. It’s down to our home performance, especially on a defensive front that we paid for.

“I think we were a bit unlucky as well. If you look at the number of shots on target Monaco had over the two games. They have been very efficient in their qualifying.”
