Man City first, Chelsea second but Arsenal, Newcastle and Spurs see Man Utd finish seventh

MANCHESTER UNITED may be tightening their grip on a Champions League spot next season, but they only finish seventh in the battle for the Premier League's richest owner.

Business magazine Forbes has today released their latest 'billionaires list' and it features seven Premier League owners.

But United find themselves behind not only Manchester City and Chelsea, but also Southampton, Newcastle and Tottenham when it comes to wealthy backers.

United's Glazer family are estimated to have a net worth on £2.86bn, which includes their interests in NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That sees them behind Katharina Liebherr - owner of Southampton - who inherited an estimated £3bn from father Markus, and Spurs' owner Joe Lewis, who is valued at £3.12bn.

Newcastle's Mike Ashley comes in as the fourth wealthiest Premier League owner, with his Sports Direct business interests seeing him valued at £3.18bn while Arsenal's majority shareholder Stan Kroenke is thought to be worth £3.77bn.

Unsurprisingly, however, it is Chelsea and City who top the list with Roman Abramovich's £5.85bn being massively eclipsed by Sheikh Mansour's £20bn valuation.

And, in a league where money talks, it remains to be seen if City can make their financial advantage pay on the field as the title race takes shape in the latter part of the season.
