Beppe Morata reveals how close Juventus came to beating Man Utd to Radamel Falcao

RADAMEL FALCAO played no part in Manchester United's draw with Chelsea yesterday, but he might not have made it to the Red Devils at all if Juventus had got their way.

The Italian side's director general Beppe Morata has revealed that Juve were close to sealing a deal for Falcao before United intervened over the summer.

The Colombian striker eventually made the move to Old Trafford on loan, but Morata has suggested that ultimately it was United's spending power that gave them the edge over the Turin side.

He told RAI programme La Domenica Sportiva: "We were very close to Falcao, as the player wanted to privilege Italy and our jersey.

"However, then Manchester United stepped forward and they have more spending power, so the deal fell apart."

Falcao's injury is not thought to be related to the knee injury that kept him out of the World Cup over the summer, but it now remains to be seen whether he will be fit to face Manchester City next weekend.

Speaking about the injury, United boss Louis van Gaal said: "He got a kick in the morning [on Friday] so we have to wait and see if he's fit enough.

"But it's not a knee problem.

"He had a knee problem but not anymore.

"We have to build Falcao up, that I have also said in the first press conference when he came to our club.

"It is difficult because we are playing [games] already, that's difficult but we have played him because I like the way he was playing so we play with two strikers.

"Now I have to choose between two strikers, even three because [James] Wilson can also play, the younger player."
