Patios can quickly become coated in moss, algae and other green stains over the winter, but now spring is the best time to get paving looking its best before the warmer weather arrives.

Moss and other green growth will grow on pathways, patios and driveways quickly as it thrive on damp surfaces and spread quickly unless regularly cleaned.

It is vital to remove moss when you can as it can damage your stonework and look unsightly, but it is incredibly slippery and can be a safety hazard, especially if there are children or anyone elderly in your home.

Not everyone owns a pressure washer and most people do not wish to use harsh chemicals near their gardens, but most natural remedies such as vinegar can often be damaging to plants.

Colin Seymour, a cleaning expert, has explained that the best natural yet effective method to clean away moss and green algae is cheap soda crystals, and he was shocked by the results after trying it out once.

One cleaning expert discovered that mixing soda crystals and water is very effective at removing green stains and killing moss (Image: Getty)

In one week, all the green stains on his concrete balcony were completely gone after a few days of rain.

He said: “I've been using soda crystals for various things around the house including stretching our washing powder, cleaning drains, removing grease and general cleaning for a long time.

“Now I have another use: removing moss from paths, balconies, patios and verandas in an affordable and environmentally friendly way.”

There are two simple ways to apply soda crystals you can either sprinkle it onto your patio after it has rained, or you mix both water and the soda crystals in a watering can and then pour it all over the patio.

Colin said: “I tested two methods: liberally sprinkle the soda crystals onto the wet balcony and create a strong solution and sprinkle using a watering can.

“Both proved to be very effective with the dry sprinkling onto the wet balcony probably being ever so slightly more effective on the first application as there would have been a higher concentration in spots than with the solution.”

Soda crystals are highly alkaline, which breaks down the moss cells and draws out moisture, causing this green menace to die quickly.

Colin said he would need to apply the solution “a few more times” until he is satisfied, but this cleaning method means you do not have to use harsh chemicals around the home while also using an effective solution that does not cost much.

Colin added: “Soda crystals cost about £1 a kg which is waaaaay cheaper than the commercial chemical moss removers.”
