The epic 296-mile train journey that goes through two countries and ends in pretty cities
The Balkan Express links Belgrade to Budva and Bar in Montenegro, taking passengers through stunning scenery.
The Balkan Express winds its way from the capital of Serbia to Montenegro's Adriatic coastline in a little over 10 hours. It passes over 435 bridges and through a number of tunnels as it travels past mountains, lakes and coastlines.
Linking Belgrade to either Bar or Budva in Montenegro, the 12 hour journey also takes in the Rijeka Viaduct, 650ft above ground level.
The 296 mile long scheme was unveiled in 1952, with works completed in 1975. It was officially opened by Yugoslavia's leader Tito in May 1976.
According to Minimalist Journeys, trains run twice a day in either direction, with one departing in the morning and arriving in the evening.
A sleeper service leaves in the evening and arrives in the morning.
The most beautiful part of the journey stretches from Podgorica to Kolašin in Montenegro, with Minimalist Journeys recommending the morning train from Bar or Podgorica.
Belgrade offers a range of accommodation, including Hotel Majestic, Belgrade Inn Garni Hotel, Hilton Belgrade and the Palace Hotel, which are rated from "good" to "fabulous" on booking.com.
In Bar, there's the Regina del Mare hotel, Hotel Agape, Hotel Princess and Stara Čaršija Hotel & Spa. Budva boasts Hotel Majestic, Dukley Hotel & Resort, Hotel Hermes Budva and Avala Resort and Villas, to name a few.
Air Serbia, Wizz Air UK, American Airlines, British Airways and GETJET fly direct to Belgrade Nikola Tesla.

The average flight time between the UK and Montenegro's capital Podgorica is two hours and 49 minutes. Budva and Bar are both about an hour's drive from Podgorica.
