Beyond Paradise star Sally Bretton has been in the spotlight for decades, therefore it may surprise fans that she was born with a different name.

The actress, 43, is best known for her portrayal of Martha Lloyd in the BBC crime drama Death in Paradise. She reprised the role of Humphrey Goodman's (Kris Marshall) love interest in the spin-off Beyond Paradise, released in 2023.

The drama returned for its second series in March, with the final episode set to air on April 26. But there is plenty fans may not know about the show's main star, including her real name.

Sally Bretton was born Sally Davis. Her stage name came to her while she was working at multinational clothing brand, Next. "A friend brought in a book all about the meanings of names, and I was in the staff room flicking through,” she told The Telegraph.

After falling on Bretton, she explained: "I just thought, 'Yup, I quite like that.’ It’s totally random, but I thought it sounded quite nice."

Sally is also known for her role as Lucy Adams in the long-running BBC sitcom Not Going Out. The series first aired in 2006 and follows Lee Mack, who plays a fictional version of himself; a man in his late thirties living as a lodger in a London flat.

The long-running show hit its landmark 100th episode over the festive period, however, fans will have to wait some time for episode 101.

Despite the Christmas special's success, Lee confirmed he would not be returning to the sitcom in 2024 as he wants to focus on other ventures.

When asked about his plans for the upcoming year, the 55-year-old opened up about his busy schedule.

He said: "More 1% Club, more Would I Lie to You? and, for the first year in a long time, I won't be doing Not Going Out. If we do bring it back, we're looking at early 2025," he disclosed.

The presenter added: "We're talking about it now. I'd love to do more, I love doing it, it's great fun, I love the cast but [...] it's not always my decision, these things. I just wait for someone to say, 'There's a bag of money, get on with it."
