An Iberian plume could see much of the UK basking in 21C heat and sunshine, according to new weather maps. As thousands of Brits have been turning on the central heating in unseasonably chilly spring weather, many have been hoping that warmer weather is on its way.

And if that’s the case then sun-loving Brits might be happy to learn that a weather front is predicted for Britain from Africa by Tuesday, April 30 before cooling down by Thursday, May 2.

An Iberian plume is a weather pattern in which a mass of warm air moves from the Iberian plateau or the Sahara to northwestern Europe, which includes the UK.

UK Weather expert Jim Dale, who is a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, explained that Britain could see record temperatures.

He said: “Well it’s not home and hosed just yet but the trend is moving into position.

“Iberian or African plumes are behind the times when the UK does receive much above average temperatures.

“Iberia has already witnessed record temperatures for the time of year and before long I’ve no doubt we will join the global throng of countries that have seen or are seeing record or near record temperatures.”

He added: “We will not be immune and late April/early May could well deliver that.”

The Met Office long range forecast covers from Tuesday, April 23 until Thursday, May 2 - and it’s also predicting things could “feel very warm” and the “sun quite strong”.

It said: “This period will be dominated by high pressure to the northwest of the UK and lower pressure to the southeast over the near continent, and the extent to which of these systems dominates at any particular time.

“The wind will probably therefore predominantly come from a northerly or easterly direction, so temperatures at least in the east are likely to remain around or a little below average, with any warmer conditions generally further west - and with the sun quite strong, it could feel very warm at times.”

It added: “There should be a reasonable amount of dry weather around, especially in the north and west, but some rain or showers are likely at times, most-likely in the south and east, but amounts are expected to be modest.

Met Office five-day forecast
