The beautiful little city named UK’s best commuter town to move to in 2024
This leafy little paradise is a TV star's favourite - although it came narrowly close to a similar place in Berkshire.
A beautiful little city has recently been named as the UK’s best commuter town to move to in 2024. The verdict was delivered by property expert and TV star Phil Spencer, who is an authoritative voice on all things houses.
Spencer chose St Albans as the place he’d most recommend to a friend if they wanted a bit of space but continued access to London. He pointed out that a train to the centre of the capital takes just 21 minutes - despite the Hertfordshire powerhouse being home to “rich history” and a number of other attractive features.
The property guru points out that a season ticket price for trains into London is £4,184 for the year - more than £1,000 cheaper than one from Reading, reveals MoveiQ.
While the Berkshire town is often touted as the next best place for London workers, it doesn’t come close to St Albans’s perfect mix of “shopping centres, green parks, great entertainment and leisure centres,” says Spencer.
He adds that all these brilliant features are within walking distance, a key aspect of what makes St Albans so liveable. The London terminus for St Albans is St Pancras International, which is on the Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, Circle, Metropolitan, and Hammersmith & City Tube lines - so it’s fairly easy to get around once you arrive.
This is a great feature if you get stuck at after work drinks in the city somewhere. The Tube will whizz you back to the station for a quick hop back to your new hometown of St Albans.
From here, you’ll be able to snuggle into bed in your new house, which probably costs about £630,000 - the average in the area.

However, house prices might be the only downside for Spencer’s number one pick. The average in the South-East region is £454,000, while Hertfordshire goes for £539,000. Even St Albans’s rival, Reading, goes for an average of just £464,000.
Other towns that made Spencer’s list include Hatfield, in Hertfordshire (2nd place), Reading (3rd place) and Borehamwood, in Hertfordshire (4th place).
He pointed out that if budget is your biggest concern, then you should consider Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, or even think about as far as Rugby, in Warwickshire.
