MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?
I tend to take holidays at the end of the season if I can. Three years ago Anya and I visited the Bordeaux region of France camping.
It was late summer so the weather was good. I’d just been to the world championships in Poland but hadn’t won a medal.
We stayed in a different place each night and did lots of wine tasting, so it was very relaxing. We also did a bit of surfing as well.
AND YOUR WORST? The worst I can remember was camping with my parents in Croatia (then Yugoslavia) when I was much younger. I have memories of spending the night of my eighth birthday holding down the sides of a tent during a huge storm.
WHICH TRAVEL GADGET IS ESSENTIAL?
My iPhone. I take it everywhere and surf the internet
My iPhone. I take it everywhere and surf the internet. You can use it to find all the best places when you are abroad.
BEST BOOK? A Short History Of Tractors In Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka is a book I found particularly entertaining.
I read it about five years ago when Anya and I were on a week’s holiday on the Costa Brava.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?
I like to do a bit of everything. I find it best to alternate between active and lazy days to get a good balance.
I love swimming in the sea and visiting all the historic landmarks and sights.
WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?
I had a great holiday in Hurghada, Egypt, four years ago. We spent most of the time snorkelling with a waterproof camera and ended up taking photos of virtually all the fish in the Red Sea.
WHERE NEXT? Anya and I will be having a delayed honeymoon in the British Virgin Islands this Christmas (we got married last week). I am very much looking forward to that.
