Celebrity traveller- Melanie Sykes
TV presenter and model Melanie Sykes, 42, lives in London with sons Roman, 10, and Valentino, eight.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?
I love the Maldives and stayed in the Banyan Tree Madivaru which was just idyllic. I feel so relaxed there that I’ve been about six times.
I really love the beaches. I’ve taken the boys as far as St Lucia but we normally stay closer to home; the South of
France, Spain or Italy are more family holiday destinations.
We also adore Dorset which feels like a million miles from London and has such beautiful countryside.
AND YOUR WORST?
I had a negative experience while staying in the South of France with my sons a couple of years ago. The hotel charged extortionate prices for bottles of water and other drinks.
Once you are in a hotel on top of a mountain you are captive.
WHICH TRAVEL GADGET IS ESSENTIAL?
A Kindle. I’m a great reader and couldn’t go on holiday without it.
BEST BOOK?
Andrea Levy’s The Long Song was a great read.
It’s set in a very hot climate; there’s something really appealing about reading stories set in exotic climates when you are away.
I have read the book du jour, Fifty Shades of Grey, but can’t say I was that impressed.
HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON HOLIDAY?
I just chill out. If there is a gym I might train but really I just prefer to hang out and do very little. As a foodie I like to try out local restaurants.
Holidays with the boys are obviously very different as it then focuses around their needs, but if I am going with a
friend or a partner then it is definitely for relaxation.
WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?
I holidayed in Santorini a few years ago and would love to go back. You can’t really beat Greece, can you? The food, music and ambience are all wonderful.
WHERE NEXT?
A friend has just moved to Australia, so it is now on my list of places to visit.
Perth sounds great.
