Knee bother for Roddick
FOURTH seed Andy Roddick was yesterday forced out of the Shanghai Masters with an injury to his left knee.
The Wimbledon finalist was 4-3 up on Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in the first set when he was unable to continue their second round match.
Roddick said: “At this point my concern is figuring out what we’re dealing with.”
Wawrinka will play Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the third round.
Lleyton Hewitt cut big-serving American John Isner down to size with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in their first round match.
The 28-year-old Australian is nearly a foot shorter than 6ft 9in Isner but came up with some fine returns.
Isner managed just five aces and racked up a whopping 37 unforced errors, leaving Hewitt to seal a second-round tie against Gael Monfils, who beat French countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-2.
Hewitt said: “It’s a matter of just taking your chances when you get into it against those guys, and I did that exceptionally well.”
Sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko beat fellow Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 6-2 with the minimum of fuss.
Tommy Haas, the 15th seed, also beat a compatriot to take his place in the second round, his 7-6, 6-4 win over Benjamin Becker earning him a tie against another German, Rainer Schuettler.
