Since winning her last Grand Slam title in Australia in 2017, Serena Williams has reached two more major finals - at Wimbledon and the US Open - and was unsuccessful in her quest to win a record-equalling 24th major singles crown.

However, she goes into today’s Wimbledon final with a stellar record against Simona Halep, having lost to the Romanian only once in 10 meetings between the pair, with that defeat coming back in 2014.

Halep has yet to win a title in 2019 but has been in menacing form at Wimbledon, even though the grass is not her favourite surface.

The Romanian has stuck to her clay-court strengths on the grass and dictated play from the baseline to reach her first Grand Slam final since winning the French Open last year.

And the 27-year-old is confident she can upset the odds against Williams on Centre Court today.

She said: "Everything is possible. That's why I started to believe more that even if I play on grass, I have my chance to win.

"I'm in the final, so I will not put pressure on myself. I just want to plan how I have to play in the final, and then enjoy.

"I'm desperate to win Wimbledon more than to stop her.”

Williams was full of praise for her opponent ahead of their meeting today and won’t be taking anything for granted.

"There's so many impressive things about her," Williams said.

"Obviously her tenacity, her ability to find power. Can't underestimate her. She's like a little powerhouse.

"I feel like she's back. She wants to prove that she can do it again."
