Scotland flounder in Toronto while Jonny Sexton BOOTS Ireland to victory
SCOTT LAWSON admitted Scotland were “not at the races” as they edged past Canada 19-17 in Toronto.
Lock Grant Gilchrist scored his first international try and captain Greig Laidlaw and Stuart Hogg added another 14 points from the boot.
But hooker Lawson, above, said the Scots made too many mistakes and missed too many tackles to be pleased with the performance.
“We talked about exerting pressure but I’d say we more absorbed it, instead of going and getting them.
“A lot of our execution was not good enough for this level – we were not at the races.
“There were a lot of missed tackles and there have to be improvements there too. It is error after error. You miss one tackle and then you are on the back foot and you find you are missing two or three.”
Scotland coach Vern Cotter added: “It’s a positive result; we won. But we’ll probably have a good look at the way we won.
“We’re not going to say that if we play and execute at the same level that we will get the same result.
“We’re well aware of what we need to do.” Scotland next play on Friday against Argentina, who lost to Ireland 23-17.
The Irish secured a first series win in Argentina – following their 29-17 triumph in the first Test – thanks to tries from Simon Zebo and Ian Madigan, with Johnny Sexton kicking 11 points.
Ireland coach Joe Schmidt, however, felt his team struggled to find much fluency in Tucuman.
“Anyone watching would have seen it as an exercise in frustration,” he said. “It was very difficult to get any continuity going and it made the job very difficult. It was a disappointing display by our standards.
“We are delighted with the result, but we know that won’t be anywhere good enough when we come to playing South Africa in November.”
France restored some pride, after being hammered 50-23 in the first Test, against Australia by restricting the Wallabies to just two penalties in a 6-0 loss in Melbourne.
Not pretty, but a win nonetheless. Congrats to @BryceKevin on winning 1st cap. Well deserved bud. pic.twitter.com/AHeNdw4StK
