JOHN JACKSON’S dream of crowning Sochi as Britain’s best ever Winter Olympics fell agonisingly short on the ice-flume in the mountains.

His four-man bobsleigh team – GBR1 – finished fifth, 0.11secs off the bronze medal at the Sanki Sliding Centre where last week Lizzy Yarnold had won Britain’s one gold of these games on her skeleton.
As if it was scripted, Russia-1 took gold to confirm the hosts position at the top of the medal table with a watching President Vladimir Putin nodding in approval. Lamin Deen’s GBR-2 were 19th.
The last gold of the games in the showcase men’s ice hockey final went to Canada, who retained their Olympic title with a 3-0 win over Sweden.
Britain finished 19th in the medal table with four - a gold, a silver and two bronze - to exactly equal their previous best tally at the very first Winter Olympics in Chamonix 90 years ago.
