Athletics: Lynsey Sharp claims European gold after Russian ban
BRITAIN’S Lynsey Sharp has been upgraded to European 800m champion after Russia’s Yelena Arzhakova was found guilty of drug-taking.
It makes me sick...
Sharp finished behind Arzhakova in Helsinki last year but the Russian athletics federation confirmed the middle-distance runner had shown “abnormal haemoglobin profile in her biological passport”.
Arzhakova’s results, dating back to July 12 2011, will be ruled out which means she will be stripped of the European 800m title, and she will serve a two-year ban from January 29 this year.
Sharp, 22, wrote on Twitter: “Just woken up to the news .
“It makes me sick I was denied the opportunity to do a lap of honour and stand on the top of the podium with my national anthem playing.”
