England nearly quit World Cup
England were on the brink of walking away from the World Cup when it became clear Bob Woolmer had been murdered.
Senior management figures, many of whom were close to the popular 58-year-old Pakistan coach, considered pulling out of the tournament – questioning whether it should carry on at all.
It was left to captain Michael Vaughan to discuss with the players whether to continue – and they agreed that Woolmer would have wanted the show to go on.
Woolmer, who was found dead in his hotel room in Jamaica last Sunday, was a long-time friend of the England coach Duncan Fletcher.
Jamaican detectives were yesterday investigating reports that Woolmer was involved in a furious row with
members of his squad hours before he died.
