Newcastle set to seal £6m swoop for Smith
Alan Smith is set to sign for Newcastle in a £6million deal after turning down offers from Sunderland, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Everton.
Magpies’ boss Sam Allardyce appears to have won the race for the England striker, 26, who will be hoping regular
first-team football can revive his career.
Smith, who has won 17 England caps, was told to leave Old Trafford by manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the interest from Newcastle was enough to leave the rest trailing.
Smith underwent a medical at St James’ Park yesterday and Allardyce remains confident he will sign a deal worth £60,000 a week.
Smith said last night as he prepared for the medical:
“I am certain it will be done and dusted tomorrow and I am sure the move is going to happen.”
