Majors are No1 for Luke Donald
LUKE DONALD has the chance to reclaim the world No1 position from Rory McIlroy this week but, to him, the rankings race has become a sideshow.
Donald’s pursuit of a Major title has become all-consuming and he will use the defence of his BMW PGA Championship title, which starts tomorrow, to tune up his game for next month’s US Open.
The spin-off to an impressive showing at Wentworth is a return to the top of the rankings but what really counts for Donald is the missing Major.
I really want to win one and until I do it will be disappointing and frustrating
“I really want to win one and until I do it will be disappointing and frustrating. I’m not going to lie about that,” said Donald. “I’ve won five or six times in the last two years and I’m certainly feeling a lot more comfortable figuring out how to close out tournaments. Obviously Majors are the next step up.”
Simon Dyson, who finished third at Wentworth last year, has pulled out with a hip injury and will be replaced by Dutchman Maarten Lafeber. Nicolas Colsaerts, who won the Volvo World Match Play on Sunday, has withdrawn from next week’s Wales Open.
