Bundesliga club captain backs Arsenal transfer
WERDER BREMEN captain Clemens Fritz has backed a possible return to the club for Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker.
Per Mertesacker is yet to feature for Arsenal this season through injury
Mertesacker’s future with Arsenal is in doubt as he is out of contract next summer.
The 32-year-old revealed last week he was open to a return to Germany at the end of the season.
Both Hannover and Bremen then expressed an interest in bringing the former Germany international back to the Bundesliga.
And now Bremen captain Fritz has revealed he would be keen for Mertesacker to join the club.
”It would be a good thing for the club," Fritz told German newspaper Bild.
Fritz played alongside Mertesacker at Bremen between 2006 to 2009.
Mertesacker is yet to feature for Arsenal this term after suffering a knee injury in pre-season.
But following the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi at the Emirates, the Gunners captain is not guaranteed to be a first-choice starter when he return to fitness.
