Southampton edge closer to Ron Vlaar deal after Lazio pull out amid injury concerns
SOUTHAMPTON have edged a step closer to a deal for free agent Ron Vlaar.
Ron Vlaar Player Profile
The Dutch international is out of contract with Aston Villa and has attracted interest from a host of clubs including Saints and Lazio.
However, the Serie A club are said to have pulled out of the running for the centre-back amid fears over his fitness.
Italian publication Calcio Mercato Web claim a deal was close to being agreed between Vlaar and the Italian club.
But Lazio's Albanian owners are said to have pulled the plug on negotiations, claiming the 30-year-old has 'physical problems'.
Ron Vlaar has been a free agent since failing to agree terms with Aston Villa on a new deal
It's believed they have concerns over his knee and calf injuries that sidelined him for large chunks of 2014/15 Premier League season.
They are quoted as saying: "Vlaar? It 'a player who has been proposed, but from what we heard has physical problems and therefore we do not take him into account."
