Newcastle fans rage as John Carver sinks to a new low after Swansea defeat

JOHN CARVER has played down claims of a bust-up with Newcastle supporters, after revealing how he was pushed to breaking point by a vicious stream of abuse from disgruntled fans.

Monk: Swans made me proud [AMBIENT]

The 50-year-old's painful descent from dream job to nightmare scenario is almost complete after members of the Toon Army he counts himself among with pride added insult to the injury of becoming the first manager to oversee seven straight defeats for the club in the Premier League era.

"It's the first time I've had to deal with anything like that," insisted Carver, after being singled out by two disgruntled supporters near the technical area.

After watching his side surrender a first-half lead provided by a close-range Ayoze Perez finish, he added: "I was getting totally abused thorough the entire second-half. I'm not accepting that.

"It's personal stuff, and I don't think it's right. No-one should have to put up with that.

"I'm not going to stand out there and get abused during the game. The club has got to do something about it because I had no protection from the sidelines."

This defeat leaves Newcastle just five points above the relegation zone.

Carver's predecessor Alan Pardew was forced to seek the shelter of the dugout towards the end of last season as supporters stepped up the campaign to hound out the former manager.

After being forced to apologise following his confrontation with Newcastle fans baiting Pardew before the defeat at Southampton earlier this season, Carver insists he has learned his lesson, instead offering an olive branch to his tormentors amid claims of a heated exchange.

"I said to the two lads who were abusing me, come and see me afterwards and I will explain to you what I'm trying to do," said Carver.

"One of the lads actually said to me 'are you threatening me?' He obviously thought I was but there was no way in the world I was going to do that. I've done that once and there's no way I'll get involved again.

"I'd love the two lads to come to the training ground, sit down, have a cup of tea and talk about it. They might then understand what I'm going through."

Like Carver, Garry Monk is busy setting records, though rather more palatable ones for the Swansea manager, whose side recovered from going behind to post a win that was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

They boast 50 points, a club best in the Premier League era.

Nelson Oliveira headed them level from Gylfi Sigurdsson's corner in first-half stoppage time, before the Icelander was given the freedom of the penalty area to put his side ahead after the break.

Jack Cork embellished the lead from close range before Siem de Jong, returning from an eight-month injury absence, put an unrealistic slant on the final outcome with a late volley.

Swansea strengthened their grip on eighth, which again would be a club best since league reorganisation 23 years ago, an even more impressive statistic considering the departure of top scorer Wilfried Bony to Manchester City in January.

"We never fully got into our stride," said Cork. "But it's a good sign when you can not be at your best but still end up getting the three points."

Monk remains cautiously optimistic of further progress and he added: "Reaching 50 points was the target at the outset of the season, and achieving that suggests we're an established Premier League team.

"But we all know that things can change quickly. We'll try to finish as strongly as we can, and then push on next year."
