Giggs had a short spell as United manager at the end of last season when David Moyes was sacked following a turbulent campaign for the Scotsman.

When Van Gaal was appointed as the new manager at Old Trafford in May 2014, United's most decorated player was named as the Dutchman's assistant.

But the 63-year-old appears to have set a succession plan for when he departs.

"Now I have the responsibility. He has tasks that he has to perform like the players. What he has to do, for me, he does it very well."
