Gerrard is set to quit Anfield after 17 years as a professional at the club and join MLS side LA Galaxy this summer.

He signed an 18-month contract worth £6million in January and could be thrown straight into the American season when he arrives.

Cole, who eared 56 caps for England, played a handful of games with Gerrard at Liverpool during a brief spell on Merseyside.

And the now-Aston Villa midfielder explained how manager Brendan Rodgers will have to search far for a replacement skipper next term.

"Any team that loses Steven Gerrard, it's going to be tough to replace him," Cole said.

"I don't think you can replace him, probably the best player of his generation for England, and for Liverpool it's unbelievable, and it's a tall ask for Liverpool but you've got a good manager in Brendan and he can change things around."

Gerrard had hoped to end his Liverpool career with the FA Cup in hand but the Reds were downed 2-1 by Aston Villa in their semi-final on Sunday.
