Mauricio Pochettino's men were desperate for a positive response after last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

The game failed to catch fire in the opening exchanges with the only highlight being a plane that flew over the stadium with a banner that read "5 in a row" to signal the number of derby victories Sunderland have recorded over Newcastle.

There were droves of Magpies supporters that left in the 27th minute fed up with what they saw.

And Spurs took advantage of the lull around the ground thanks to Chadli.

After being gifted possession, the winger burst into space before curling a low effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards for his ninth goal of the league campaign.

Newcastle were back on level terms just 18 seconds after the restart when Jack Colback followed up on Daryl Janmaat's blocked effort.

Nacer Chadli opened the scoring for Spurs

Eriksen restored Spurs' lead eight minutes later when his free-kick eluded Tim Krul before nestling in the bottom corner of the net.

Kane then added a third late on with a clincial finish to wrap up the points.

Spurs climb above Southampton into sixth spot in the table.
