Arsenal are NOT good enough to catch Chelsea in title race, claims Ruud Gullit

RUUD GULLIT says Arsenal cannot win the Premier League or Champions League with their current squad.

Arsenal - Most Expensive Transfers

The former Chelsea, AC Milan and Sampdoria player, who also had spells managing Chelsea and Newcastle, believes Arsene Wenger's squad is too weak in midfield.

That will infuriate Gunners fans who have seen their side climb to second in the Premier League and into the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley, albeit having been dumped out of Europe over two legs by Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Gullit said: "Chelsea have done really well [this season]. They bought some good players that improved their team from last year.

I don't think Arsenal are capable of winning a title with that team

"Arsenal are surprisingly also doing well – but I don't think they are capable of winning a title or the Champions League with that team. I still think they need more power in midfield.

"But it is good to see that Arsenal are doing well, good to see that Manchester United are doing well and Chelsea and Manchester City – and we also need a good Liverpool because it is better for the quality of the teams in Britain."

Gullit, speaking ahead of this evening's Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai, also joked that perhaps United did not spend their £100million very well in the summer.

Ruud Gullit claims Arsenal are currently not good enough to win a title

Asked why their rivals, City, have been unable to bring a constant stream of trophies to the club after spending so much money too, Gullit said: "It is because your position is not standing still. Man United spent £100m – if they spent it wisely enough I don't know because most of them are on the bench.

"But Chelsea are not sitting still, even Arsenal are trying to improve. The money they generate also from TV, a lot of teams have the possibility to improve and therefore it is difficult for Manchester City.

"The biggest problem for City is not the title, but Europe. The players they have and the experience they have, they did not do a good job in Europe and that is their main goal to win the Champions League."
