Young scored and created another in a thrilling game at Old Trafford that saw United move four points clear of City in the Premier League.

Mauroane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling all netted after Young cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s opener, before the latter bagged a consolation for City late on.

It was United’s first win at home over their rivals in four years, ending a three-game losing streak, and fires them to just a point off second-place Arsenal.

And Young believes the spirit of the team earned them the victory today.

"It was magnificent win today,” he said.

“We knew we had to get three points today and we knew it was going to be a tough game.

“We were disappointed to go a goal down but we showed that character and that team spirit to get ourselves back in the game."

Young was not a first-team regular at the start of the season but the winger revealed how he forced his way back into Louis van Gaal’s selection plans.

"I've just listened to what the manager has said," added Young. "He's wanted to play me and I've wanted to go out there and repay him.

"I was brought in the team to do a job and everyone was magnificent today. Obviously it was a derby so we are delighted to get the win."
