That is according to Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand.

United have lost their last four derbies against City, although they are currently above their bitter rivals in the Premier League.

Louis van Gaal has masterminded an excellent turnaround in United's form in recent weeks, and Ferdinand, who now plays for QPR, thinks United will come out on top.

"I expect his Manchester United side to beat City on Sunday and demonstrate they'll be a real force again," Ferdinand wrote in his column for The Sun.

"The pendulum has been in City's favour recently but United have a great chance to prove it has swung back towards them. That's down to Van Gaal.

"The manager wasn't too pig-headed to notice the team wasn't functioning playing three at the back.

"He went to a formation and system the players are more comfortable with and now they are winning and looking more confident.

"Take Ander Herrera. He came on a big fee and didn't really hit the ground running — but the way United are playing suits him and Marouane Fellaini down to the ground.

Rio Ferdinand thinks Louis van Gaal's side will come out on top on Sunday

"Michael Carrick returning has obviously helped but the biggest of the lot is playing Wayne Rooney up front.

"Wayne's a goalscorer. He has United's goals record in his sights and the side functions better when he is there.

"The fact is that United need a fit Rooney up front. But it's about more than just results. The performance against Liverpool was the Manchester United of old."
