Garry Monk to offer Michu shock reprieve at Swansea

GARRY MONK has offered Michu a chance of a shock Swansea reprieve as long as the Spaniard fully commits himself to the club.

Last summer Monk told the 29-year-old he wanted him to be a key part of his plans, but the former Rayo Vallecano man opted to join Napoli on loan with an option for the Italian club to complete a permanent deal for £8m.

However, the move has not worked out for the Spain international, as his continued struggles with an ankle injury have limited him to just five appearances for Rafa Banitez's men and there is no prospect of the Serie A club forking out the agreed purchase fee.

Monk had appeared to close the door on a Liberty Stadium return for Michu, who has just over a year remaining on his contract, when he stated he had no desire to recall him from Italy earlier this season.

But with the player having acknowledged he is likely to be back in Wales this summer, Monk may be prepared to offer Michu, who scored 22 goals in his first season with the Swans, another chance.

It's a new summer and I'll have to sit and have a similar kind of discussion on where his focus is and how he is

Garry Monk

He said: "After we had a good talk it was his decision he wanted to go to Napoli and I wasn't going to stand in his way as I was only looking for players that are fully committed to myself, the team and the club.

"Michu felt he wanted to go and try Napoli and I knew Michu very well, so I didn't have a problem with it.

"But it's a new summer and I'll have to sit and have a similar kind of discussion on where his focus is and how he is. I am not ruling anything out at this stage.

"I have made a conscious effort to keep tabs on him and make sure we understand everything that's going on with him."

Angel Rangel is set to deputise at right-back against Everton tomorrow after Kyle Naughton was ruled out for the season by an ankle problem, while Jefferson Montero is a doubt with a hamstring injury.
