Aberdeen up but feeling down

ABERDEEN took a decisive step towards clinching runners-up spot in the league with a 1-0 win over Inverness last night – but Derek McInnes admits his players are gutted not to win the title.

It’s 21 years since the Dons finished so high in the table, but their manager reckons his men feel let down that they couldn’t win a first championship since 1985.

Two defeats against champions Celtic are the only ones Aberdeen have suffered in their last 21 league matches, but they remain seven points adrift having played one game more.

They are on course for a record points tally, but McInnes, who saw Ash Taylor net the winner against Caley Thistle, said: “It says a lot for my players that they are feeling that maybe finishing second place in the league is a disappointment for them.

“I think if that’s the case that we end the campaign with the runners-up place clinched by a record number of points then we can reflect on a job well done.

“Losing the games against Celtic doesn’t sit well with us, but the consistency shown by the players has been great and you can’t always win.

“Tonight we never allowed Inverness to get going at all and caused them a right few problems.

Inverness boss John Hughes said: “Aberdeen deserved to win and they could have scored a couple of more goals in the second half.”
