Paul McShane admits heavy defeat to Swansea is wake-up call for Hull

PAUL McSHANE is confident Hull can avoid the drop but admits their defeat to Swansea is a big wake-up call for Steve Bruce's side.

Swansea 3-1 Hull: Tigers fail to ease relegation fears

Hull looked to have eased their relegation fears with back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and QPR in February but two points from a possible 15 since then has left them deep in trouble.

Two goals from striker Bafetimbi Gomis and a seventh of the season for midfielder Ki Sung-yueng sealed the points for the Swans after the visitors had David Meyler sent off for a reckless lunge on Kyle Naughton.

The Tigers are now only six points ahead of bottom-club Leicester after their dramatic win over West Ham.

"It's very worrying when you are down there because there are always twists and turns in the last few weeks," said Republic of Ireland international McShane. "Every year there are teams who put runs together and others who get dragged into it.

"This has got to be a massive wake-up call because it's okay when you are a few places above the relegation zone but when you look at the points difference it's nothing. A single weekend can change everything and we are definitely bang in it."

At 2-0 down McShane had momentarily given the Tigers hope with his first Premier League goal since December 2008 but less than three minutes later Meyler was sent off to end their hopes of a comeback.

Paul McShane admits the loss to Swansea has been a wake-up call

It's like we need to go 2-0 down to get going and that's not good enough

Gomis made the game safe in stoppage time with a superb chipped finish to bag his first top-flight brace for the Swans.

"It's like we need to go 2-0 down to get going and that's not good enough," added McShane.

Bruce's side have one of the most difficult run-ins of all the club in the relegation battle, going to Southampton next weekend before facing Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Burnley, Spurs and then Manchester United on the final day.

But despite the daunting set of fixtures, McShane is confident they can will get the points they need to steer themselves away from trouble.

He insisted: "Who's to say we don't go and beat one of the big boys on our home turf and get results away from home?

"It does not matter who we are playing because we know we can play against the big boys, we've had some good results away from home."

Hull's problems are a stark contrast to Swansea's excellent form as they notched up a 13th win of the campaign, which is a Premier League record for the Welsh club.

Monk: Swansea deserved Hull win [AMBIENT]

Garry Monk's side are a single point away from the club's top flight record of 47 set under Brendan Rodgers in the 2011/12 season. They could beat the record with a win over former manager Roberto Martinez and his Everton side when they visit the Liberty Stadium next weekend.

Monk has been encouraged by the recent form of France international Gomis after he scored his first Premier League double for the club since joining last summer.

Gomis had looked on his way out of Swansea's after expressing his frustration at a lack of playing time in January but he now has five league goals since the departure of Wilfried Bony to Manchester City.

Swans captain Ashley Williams said: "Bafe's shown a lot of character and it's great for him. There was great athleticism for the first one and the confidence he has to chip the second was brilliant.

"He's been getting better and better, he's still got a lot to do but he's worked hard when it's been tough and I'm pleased he's getting the praise he deserves."
