Johnson could start against Newcastle

Johnson, on bail after his arrest on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16, had a club suspension lifted two weeks ago.

The former Manchester City star came on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat at West Ham and could start against the Magpies.

Advocaat said: “It was good to get him back for the West Ham game and now he’s trained for ten days more, and he is really up for it. He’s a great player.’’

Johnson, 27, scored the only goal in Sunderland’s win at  at St James’ Park in December.
