The Red Devils secured a 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford earlier today after Liverpool suffered a 4-1 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates.

The results mean that Brendan Rodgers' men are now eight points off their fierce rivals in the Premier League table with just seven games left to play.

We are still not certain about Champions League qualification - it is still a rat race

However, Van Gaal believes that Liverpool, as well as Southampton, have the quality to close the gap on United should the Red Devils slip up before the end of the season.

The Dutchman explained: "We are still not certain about Champions League qualification - it is still a rat race.

"But we have given a blow to Liverpool and Southampton also lost. It is a big gap. Now we have to wait to see if the gap is too big for Tottenham too. But we have to play the top three - it is still a rat race."
