In a fiery south London derby, Lee Gregory had a 29th minute penalty saved by Charlton keeper Stephen Henderson, which saw Chris Solly sent off to deliberate handball.

Alou Diarra then put Charlton ahead in the 67th minute before sub Magaye Gueye hauled the hosts level on 79 minutes.

Hooiveld, who is on loan from Southampton, then struck with three minutes left to keep Millwall in contention of beating the drop.

Millwall are now four points adrift and boss Neil Harris said: "The belief is there - the players have made that themselves.

“They've got a trust amongst themselves and I trust them to make their own decisions.”
