Thousands walked out by half-time in their previous home game against Aston Villa, but Advocaat is urging them to stick with the side for this North East showdown.

He said: ”It’s a special game and very important. The most important thing is that we show the crowd we want to win and get them behind us.

“It is very important for them to support us. That can be a key factor. It’s a special moment for everybody, but it’s about getting the result we need.

“We know it’s something special for our fans, but we need a win regardless of who we are playing.

“We have to get a good result in every game and it starts on Sunday.”

Steven Fletcher, who scored a hat-trick for Scotland against Gibraltar last week, is in Advocaat’s squad.

And he’s been told to transfer his international form to the Premier League.

“It’s important for me that he scores for us if he plays because we are paying his wages,” said Advocaat.

Defender Wes Brown has been ruled out with a knee injury and the Sunderland boss admitted: ”It’s difficult to say how long it will take, but at least three weeks.“
