The Blues skipper made his professional debut for the club in 1998, and has gone on to make an astonishing 653 appearances over the course of 17 seasons.

Despite seeing his chances limited under former boss Rafa Benitez, Terry has emerged as a key man for Mourinho after the Portuguese tactician rejoined the club from Real Madrid.

Terry has been ever-present in Chelsea’s defence this campaign as the club close in on their first league title in five years, and speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Stoke (5.30pm), Mourinho explained why Terry had decided to confirm his stay at Stamford Bridge with two months of football still to play.

He said: “There was no big emotion [for the club], I knew it [would happen]. It was just a question of the little details and the timing.

“We all found the period without football [in the international break] as the moment to sign it and make it public.
