Two good saves to mark his 50th cap – from Parolo’s 25 yarder and Eder’s close range effort – but had little chance with Pelle’s deftly headed goal.

Some uncomfortable moments in first half. Switched off and allowed Darmian to get goal side and set up a chance. Replaced at half-time.
Chris SMALLING 6
Good to see him stepping out of defence with the ball a couple of times but passing let him down and he came off injured just before half-time.
Phil JAGIELKA 7
England’s best defender on the night. Three great interceptions from Florenzi, Pelle and Vazquez but nowhere near Pelle for the goal.
Kieran GIBBS 5
Missed a great chance for the equaliser when he shot wide after being set up by Rooney. Booked for a first half foul.
Phil JONES 5
Allowed Chiellini past him too easily for Italy’s goal. Happy to drop into favoured back four position after Smalling’s departure.
Jordan HENDERSON 5
Usual hard-working shift but not always comfortable on the right side of the diamond. Improved in the second half before being replaced.
Fabian DELPH 5
Like Henderson, struggled to make impact in first half, when England suffered from a lack of movement and possession.
Wayne ROONEY 8
England’s most dangerous player. Struck bar with deflected shot, twice denied by Buffon as well as producing pass of the night to release Walcott.
Theo WALCOTT 5
Only got away once when released by Rooney but wasted the chance and replaced early in second half by Barkley.
Harry KANE 6
Stood up well to a tough reception from Chiellini. Good headed knock down to Rooney and saw a goal-bound shot deflected into the side-netting.
