Kane is expected to sign a £100,000-a-week contract - tripling his pay packet at Spurs - to rejoin the club he played for as a youngster.

The news will come as a huge shock to Tottenham fans, who have enjoyed Kane's emergence this season, with chants of "he's one of our own" regularly ringing around White Hart Lane.

But Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has moved early for Kane in a campaign where he has hugely impressed, going joint-top of the Premier League scoring charts with 19 strikes alongside Chelsea's Diego Costa and becoming a full England international.

Wenger lobbied the Arsenal board personally to push through the move, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy sanctioning the deal after weeks of top secret negotiations.

Wenger decided to sign Kane after seeing his double earn Spurs a 2-1 North London derby victory over his side in February.

The Frenchman is believed to have locked himself away in his house for 48 hours straight following the defeat - watching continuous re-runs of Kane's performance.

Wenger was made aware of pictures emerging on social media of a young Kane in Arsenal kit, forming the idea in his mind to lure him back to the club.

A source close to the deal told Express Sport: "Arsene was raging after the 2-1 defeat to Spurs earlier this season.

"He just could not get the words 'he's one of our own' out of his head.

"So he hatched a plan to get Harry in a red and white shirt once again - and ensure he never has to be on the receiving end of that chant again."

Kane made his first start for England in last night's 1-1 friendly draw with Italy in Turin.

But his next appearance for his country is set to come as an Arsenal player, with Wenger breaking the club's transfer record for the 21-year-old.

The £50m fee will to top the £42.5m Arsenal paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013 and will comfortably make Kane the most expensive English player of all time.

And he will follow in the footsteps of England great Sol Campbell by making the controversial switch - who was lablled a 'Judas' by Spurs fans after quitting the club for Arsenal in 2001.

Born in Chingford, Essex, just five miles from Tottenham's home ground, Kane spent a year in Arsenal's academy aged 8.

He then trained at Watford for two months before joining Spurs aged 11 in 2004.

Having been farmed out to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester, it appeared that Kane's future lay away from north London.

But after being blooded by Tim Sherwood last season, Kane had to wait his chance under new boss Mauricio Pochettino this term but has now established himself as a key player at the club.

Real Madrid had been linked with the 6ft 2in frontman but Arsenal now look to have won the race for his services.

*You may have guessed it already but this story is an April Fool! Express Sport can't see Spurs selling Kane to Arsenal anytime soon...
