Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso opens up on 'emotional' Anfield return

BAYERN MUNICH midfielder Xabi Alonso has admitted his return to Anfield on Sunday was 'emotional'.

The Spaniard played in front of the Liverpool supporters once again in a charity match organised by Reds captain Steven Gerrard.

Alonso, 33, spent five successful years at the Merseysiders, where he won the Champion League, Super Cup, FA Cup and Community Shield before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

The defensive midfielder said: "For me it was really emotional.

"After I left I didn’t have the chance to come properly to say goodbye and it is really special to feel that link between myself and the Liverpool supporters.

"And it has been fantastic, a great cause, and everything has been fantastic and everyone is delighted with how things have gone.

"It brought a lot of memories back to my mind because you have to leave Liverpool to feel that and feel special again."
