Manchester United weren't most people's choices at the start of the season to finish in the top four.

Ponderous and tepid were two words to describe United's style of play under Louis van Gaal.

But after a 2-1 win away to bitter rivals Liverpool before the international break, this proved to be a real game-changer.

United produced a fluid display that exhibited an air of confidence which had been missing in previous months.

Wayne Rooney was dangerous and Ander Herrera seemed to play with the shackles off.

Van Gaal has imbued a winning spirit and the win at Anfield has consolidated their top four spot and they are five points clear of the Reds.

The Dutch tactician produced a dossier to journalists to defend his long-ball tactics after his side's 1-1 draw away to West Ham last month.

Previously, United would pump the ball forward to Marouane Fellaini, but now they have rediscovered their swagger.

United have since enjoyed an incredible turnaround of fortunes and are unbeaten since a 2-1 defeat to Swansea.

The top four race will take some twists and turns before May, but United have got their act together at just the right time.

If they can keep this up, they will clinch Champions League football come the end of the season.
