REVEALED: Manchester United's TRIPLE deal for Hummels, Lewandowski and Kagawa

MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly tried to sign Borussia Dortmund trio Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski and Shinji Kagawa in 2012.

According to the Daily Mail, Ferguson travelled to Germany to watch the cup final where Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 5-2.

All three players scored that day, Kagawa opening the scoring, Hummels notching a penalty and Lewandowski finishing with a hat-trick.

It is claimed the then United boss Ferguson was hoping to wrap up an audacious triple deal but only ended up landing Shinji Kagawa for £12million.

Lewandowksi was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in subsequent seasons before quitting Dortmund for arch rivals Bayern in 2014.

Hummels is a top target for current United boss Louis van Gaal and is said to have given his word to Ferguson in 2012 that should he leave Dortmund for a move abroad it would be to Old Trafford.
