Don’t blame Raheem Sterling for wanting to leave Liverpool - Matt Le Tissier

SOUTHAMPTON legend Matt Le Tissier says Raheem Sterling cannot be criticised if he decides to leave Liverpool for the money.

Sterling is currently the centre of a contract saga at Liverpool as the Anfield club seek to tie the 20-year-old down to a long-term deal.

He is reportedly seeking as much as £180,000 a week in wages, a figure that greatly surpasses his current salary but represents his perceived value in world football.

And Le Tissier believes that although the best choice for Sterlings’s career would be to stay at Liverpool, the winger cannot be blamed if he forces a big-money move abroad.

"I think this really boils down to what Raheem wants out of his career," Le Tissier told Sky Sports News HQ.

"If he wants to go and make as much money as he possibly can, which I'm not going to criticise him for, if that's what he wants to do, then absolutely fine - then you'll see him going to one of the big boys abroad.”

Real Madrid are reportedly considering an offer for Sterling, as are Arsenal, who emerged as shock suitors this morning.

But Le Tissier insists the player should stay at Anfield and get games under manager Brendan Rodgers.

"Is that going to be best for his development? Possibly not,” he said.

"At those clubs, there's a lot more pressure, a lot better players around him, and he may not play week in, week out.

"Whereas at Liverpool, he will get that. He’s pretty much guaranteed - unless Brendan Rodgers is going to rest him - of playing week in, week out. And it is a brilliant football club to be at.

"But if he chooses... a lot more money somewhere else, and that’s the way he wants to go, you can’t criticise him for that."
