England would have done better at the World Cup WITH John Terry - Bobby Gould

ENGLAND would have gone a lot further at the World Cup had Chelsea skipper John Terry been involved.

Mourinho: Terry will be at Chelsea next season [AMBIENT]

That is according to former Blues boss Bobby Gould.

Terry, who earned 78 England caps, retired from international football in 2012.

Gould believes England would have gone deeper in the tournament in Brazil last summer had Terry prolonged his international career.

Speaking ahead of the Bristol regional heat to find the 'People's Pundit' championed by Carlsberg, the official beer of the Premier League, Gould exclusively told Express Sport: "The biggest mistake Roy Hodgson made was not trying to persuade Terry to come out of retirement.

"If he'd gone round to visit Terry and asked him to go to the World Cup, England would have done a lot better."

Terry put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension with Chelsea on Thursday, and Gould thinks it is fantastic news for both club and player.

He added: "What he has done for Chelsea has been incredulous. He's loved the manager he's working with and his role in the team.

"Terry is a very special human being and a great leader of players."
