Roy Hodgson made to sweat by FA chairman Greg Dyke over new England contract

ROY HODGSON will be made to wait at least another year to find out if he has a job with England beyond France 2016, with FA chairman Greg Dyke in no rush to enter into new contract negotiations.

The 67-year-old indicated earlier this month he would be interested in remaining in place after his contract expires next summer.

He has already been earmarked to represent England at the draw for the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in St Petersburg on July 25 on behalf of the FA, but Dyke is refusing to give any indication at this time whether Hodgson will be the man chosen to conduct that campaign.

With the disappointing show in the Brazil World Cup still fresh in the mind, the FA are certainly not about to rush into renewed talks with Hodgson.

England expect to maintain their 100 per cent win record in the qualifiers against Lithuania at Wembley tomorrow, so there is no question Hodgson does not maintain the wholehearted support of an FA which was happy to endorse the continuation of his contract after that 2014 World Cup display. But a decision to extend the commitment is a very different matter.

Roy Hodgson has been left sweating on his job

Scars remain from 2010, when Fabio Capello was given an extension to his contract before a poor World Cup showing in South Africa that eventually led to his departure less than two years later, with the FA committed to paying compensation reportedly in the region of £1m.

As a result, Hodgson may even have to wait until after the European Championships in France next year to find out if he will be the man chosen to lead England to Russia in 2018.

Dyke, who infamously made a cut-throat gesture at the World Cup draw in December 2013 when England were grouped with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica, said: “I get on quite well with Roy and I chat to him all the time. We have not talked about contracts yet. We genuinely haven’t discussed it.

“Roy will go to St Petersburg for the draw in July – I am not allowed to go after what happened last time!

“We will have the discussion with Roy in the next nine months to a year. When we decided in Brazil that we wanted Roy to continue with his contract, we thought, ‘He’s got a contract, he sees it through’. Sometime in the next year we will discuss what happens afterwards.”
