Diego Costa: This could be the reason why Chelsea crashed out of Champions League to PSG

DIEGO COSTA believes that Chelsea's heavy Christmas fixture list could have played some part in the club's Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blues secured a 1-1 draw in the first-leg at the Parc des Princes, putting them in pole position for the return game in London.

However, strikes from Brazilian duo David Luiz and Thiago Silva saw Laurent Blanc's men progress to the quarter finals at Stamford Bridge on away goals, leaving Chelsea with just the Premier League to play for.

And speaking to Marca, Costa explained that he and his teammates should have secured the win against the current Ligue 1 champions, but that a congested Christmas period could have played some part in Chelsea's lethargic performance.

Diego Costa believes that fatigue may have played a part in Chelsea's Champions League exit

It could be that the effort during Christmas has taken its toll as we played three games in seven days but it's no excuse

Diego Costa

He said: "It could be that the effort during Christmas has taken its toll as we played three games in seven days but it's no excuse.

"We had enough quality to play a different game (in London) but it was not to be. PSG have a great team and we have to accept it and congratulate them.

"I hope that next season we will go further than this year."
