Mesut Ozil REVEALS Ballon d'Or target to silence Paul Scholes

ARSENAL star Mesut Ozil has set himself the target of winning the Ballon d'Or in order to prove Paul Scholes wrong.

The Germany international has been plagued by injuries this term, limiting him to just 14 Premier League appearances.

The 26-year-old, who is currently preparing for his country's friendly against Australia tonight (7.30pm) and the Euro 2016 qualifier in Georgia on Sunday (5pm), believes the Ballon d'Or is not an unrealistic aim.

"Should I continue to improve myself and stay healthy, I want to get my hands on the Ballon d'Or in the upcoming years," Ozil told German paper Sport Bild.

"I am convinced that it can work out. I am headed in the right direction.

"I am a world champion and play at a top club in the Premier League.

"It's far more physical here [England] than in Spain or in the Bundesliga. I constantly have bruises, but it only makes me stronger, and physically I feel better than ever before."

Ozil, who as Express Sport reported, is set for crunch talks with Arsene Wenger after missing the Gunners' 2-1 victory over Newcastle .

And he is desperate to prove Scholes wrong after the Manchester United legend suggested Ozil was 'going through the motions' at Arsenal.

He added: "He's entitled to say that. He wants to polarise as a pundit on TV.

"But in the end, such statements only give me an extra push."
