The Reds skipper came off the bench in the 2-1 defeat to United, but received his marching orders just 38 seconds later for a stamp on opponent Ander Herrera.

And Grobbelaar believes the 34-year-old midfielder is already thinking about his summer move to MLS outfit LA Galaxy.

He said: "Steven Gerrard wanted to stamp his authority on to the match.

His head unfortunately is in Los Angeles

Bruce Grobbelaar

"I know that Gerrard’s heart is in Liverpool, and always will be, but his head unfortunately is in Los Angeles.

"He said himself that he takes full responsibility for what his actions were.

"A lot of other referees would have just given a yellow and warned him to stamp it out because there were some other hefty challenges and some tackles that could've gone either way."
